Reflection on painting 1
Today I have been working on 'painting 1' I am using this piece as a starting point to a series of narrative paintings. I am wanting to explore the idea of the modern day we live in and our new normal with using social media to record our lives and interact with each other, this idea will be the starting point of the narrative I will attempt to explore, I have been referring to this painting as 'pre hotel' as I want to communicate that this character in the painting is swarmed and overwhelmed by the influences of society and they are trapped in the overlap of people recording and sharing their movements with each other through social media. I want the work to show how people unknowingly sacrifice their privacy being part of the social media loop. I don't want the work to stress too much that this is a negative thing, I would prefer the work to communicate a feeling of uncertainty.
I have also been looking into identities and how a person can have an inside identity and an outside identity they show to others, I also am interested in the idea of an online identity and how this can be an influence on how other may see themselves. I have looked at artist Wyatt Mills who tackles this idea of two identities, having one on the inside and portraying one on the outside, his paintings have a traditional base structure to them, yet an unsure and strange swap around and overlap of features of the figure.
I have also started to think of composition and objects I could include in the work, I had an idea to think of an object that records movement, I thought that whatever I found to be suitable, I could change to fit the style of the painting. I discovered eye movement recording equiptment and thought that this could go with the work, the photo of the eye movement recorder included the eye blown up in black and white on a television screen, straight away I was intrigued by this image of the eye on the television screen and thought that It could work in a painting. This idea of the eye on the television screen took me to look at the 'eye of providence' originally a christian symbol which stood for god watching over humanity, I recognised this eye within the triangle straight away and realised it has been used a lot to symbolise being watched over. I thought I could use this idea of the eye within a shape to communicate the message that we are all watching each other everyday though social media.
Putting elements in the painting made me start to think about composition and how it could all work together as a painting. In order for this painting to be completed to a professional standard I need to sand down the edge as the edge of the board is not equally as smooth as the other side. I also need to keep painting until I have a finished piece, I will start researching on how artists know they have a finished piece or If they don't know, if they don't know then I will research on how they come to make the decision that it is finished.
I will also keep researching the theory and concept behind the work to make it stronger.
