Painting 2 process and reflection
I've been working on a painting which in terms of concept would be the second painting within a series. I have changed the painting a few times, as I want to try my best to resolve it rather than leaving it unfinished and moving on to a new piece of work, this has been very challenging. I know that I can leave a painting and continue with it again, but the problem with the painting was that I was unhappy with the portrait, I want the portrait to be strong as it is the focal point of the painting, even though there will be other objects surrounding it.
first stage: priming: acrylic prime applied vertical, horizontal, vertical, light sanding, repeat.
Second stage, drawing of the figure and composition. I found it difficult to draw from photo and original sketch, I have researched how to make this easier and more accurate, I will try out drawing a small and accurately proportioned sketch from photo then hire a projector and the image up to a larger scale onto the hardboard. I had to rub out the original painting as the colours were off and the portrait was not in proportion.
I gradually managed to achieve the skin tones, I found it much easier to work a contrast by applying a dark background in acrylic rather than painting straight onto the white primer, the dark background enables me to see where needs more dark/mid/lighter tones. I will consider this process in future. I also wanted to achieve a layered brushstroke look in the painting, I managed this after a few attempts. I went on to paint a red tiled background as I wanted it to have a feel of danger and unfamiliarity, but I also want the colour to aim to portray seducing the figure. the red tiled background is also to overwhelmed the character in the painting and the viewer. In terms of the narrative, I want this painting to act as the character entering the hotel environment, being withdrawn from urban society.
I've had people say to me that the red in the painting reminds them of horror.

I wanted the eyes to hold most of the expression yet still be very painterly. At first I filled in the eyes blue, this did not work against the red background, I felt like the red took over, the most expression in the painting should be the red background and the eyes of the figure, to solve this I painted the eyes green, as red and green are complimentary colours it helped to make the eyes pop out against the red, I felt that this decision was a success.

In order to complete the portrait I needed to edit the size of the top of the head. So far I am happy with the painting, I will do further research to work out what I need to do next, I'm questioning whether to have a pattern on the red tiles, which green to fill in the plant.
